Phu Hai camp is located in the center of Con Dao Town, visitors can walk or ride to there. It is also known as Banh I, was built by French colonialists in 1862 and completed in 1896. It consists 10 collective cells, 1 special prison cell, 20 chambers of stone, rice barns, rice husking grates; later it was changed to be a hospital. There are also other buildings such as: club, parlor, kitchen, canteen, the chapel, the order room, storehouse, supervisory office and garden; the total area is 12,015 m2.
In American war period, it was called Lao I or republican camp or Camp 2, and the last name is Phu Hai Camp. It can be said that this place prisoned many Vietnamese heroes such as prisoners from Can Vuong war, anti-French writers Ngo Duc Ke, Dang Nguyen Can, La Xuan Oai, Phan Chu Trinh, revolutionary Vietnamese soldiers such as comrade Ton Duc Thang, Pham Hung, Pham Van Dong..., and the students who fought against the US.
